Renault Symbioz was Unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show
The idea of autonomous cars is not a new one, and it is no longer a concept that belongs in sci-fi movies or far off visions of our future. In fact, we are getting closer and closer to having a range of autonomous cars to choose from on showroom floors. With more and more countries looking to phase out fuel driven vehicles in the next couple of decades, the race is on to create a vehicle that has little or no negative impact on the environment when being driven, as well as a car that has what, up to now, was always thought of as the technology of the future – that is autonomous technology.
So, now the challenge that many motor vehicle manufacturers are faced with is once we live in a world of green automated transport, how exactly to do we fit this into our way of living. After all, an autonomous car by virtue of the fact that you don’t have to ‘drive’ is surely so much more than just a mode of transport. It can be an office, an extension of your home, a place to entertain people, a living space.

Renault Symbioz Interior
It is just this idea that sparked the newest concept car from Renault – the Symbioz. The name, rooted from the ancient Greek word ‘sumbiōsis’ which means living together, says it all. This newest and most daring vision of the future presented by the French car company is the perfect illustration of a time to come where cars will become an integral element of the way we live and not just the way we get around. The idea behind the Symbioz is that it “will function harmoniously and in permanent interaction with its environment, road network infrastructure and the digital lifestyles of its occupants.”
Unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Symbioz integrates home living with mobility and is seen by its creator, Stéphane Janin who heads up Renault’s Concept Car Design department, as an extension of the way we will live. It will allow you to turn on lights remotely, close shutters, access music and other media, while also acting as an add on space for your home.

Renault Symbioz Exterior
When asked how the Symbioz will fit into home life he had this to say:
“To bring the home into the car in a clearly visible way, our first step was to match colors and materials. Hence the choice of copper for the exterior, as we said, but also grey with touches of blue for the interior. These colors are fairly standard in modern, uncluttered homes, a sort of “Scandinavian” approach, you might say, that is very eloquent. In terms of materials, the vehicle features wood, marble and even porcelain, materials frequently used in home building and decoration. The challenge was to apply a high-tech approach in terms of cut and finish, adapting them for use in a car particularly in terms of weight. Without forgetting the felt used on the armchairs in SYMBIOZ, which is the same as for the domestic couch. A creation by textile designer Aleksandra Gaca. Conversely, you can see that the house has no walls or interior pillars. The entire ground floor is a huge living area. A configuration inspired by the vehicle cabin, which has no B-pillar or transmission tunnel.”
