Renault returned to the Formula 1 track in 2016 by re-entering the arena as a full constructor. Two years down the line the auto manufacturer has already managed to finish sixth in the 2017 constructors’ championship, and has now become the fifth Formula 1 team after Haas, Williams, Red Bull and Sauber to lift the veil on its new car ahead of the 2018 season.

Renault’s Two-Pronged Approach

Renault’s main goal is to challenge for F1 championships within the next two years, which means the margin for error is basically non-existent if they want to close the gap on the sport’s current front runners. The silver bullet they will be employing to do so is the upgraded power unit that will feature in the newly unveiled RS18 from this season onward. This, in combination with the driving talents of Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz (the latter on loan from Red Bull for the moment), comprises the team’s two-pronged approach to gain the competitive edge in the upcoming season.

DID YOU KNOW? In the wake of Scuderia Toro Rosso switching from Renault to Honda engines, McLaren grabbed the opportunity to become the third and final Renault-powered team alongside Renault Sport and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

Building on the successes of 2017

Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul has high hopes when it comes to upward trajectory in the coming term. The team developed dramatically throughout 2017 and ended last year’s campaign with the fourth fastest car on merit. “Last year was successful in many ways,” he said. “It was the second year in our rebuilding and a further step towards our long-term plans and aims.”

According to Abiteboul, the previous year was all about drawing investment and talent and building the brand. In the coming year, all efforts will be focussed on showing continued progression by means of results. The team wants to showcase their growth on every front, including their drivers, operations, power unit and chassis.

“We want to demonstrate this in many different ways, from the teams we will be directly racing against, to the gap to the leaders, including also our fan base and the respect that our team will inspire in the way we behave on and off track,” Abiteboul concluded.
