At the recent 2024 IAA Transportation Show in Hanover, Renault stole the spotlight with the official reveal of their latest concept vehicle, the Renault Estafette. This all-electric van is a quirky yet throwback-futuristic take on urban delivery vehicles. Although it’s not available for purchase, the Estafette offers a fascinating glimpse into Renault’s vision for sustainable city logistics, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
A Nostalgic Revival With A Modern Twist
The original Renault Estafette, launched in 1959, was a pioneer in its own right. It was one of the first front-wheel-drive vans, and its practical design, coupled with an economical engine, made it a favourite for business pursuits. Now, almost 65 years later, Renault has reimagined the Estafette for a new era. While it evokes some nostalgia, this concept van is firmly focused on the future.
Standing tall at 2.59 meters with an overall length of 4.87 meters, the Estafette’s size is comparable to Renault’s Trafic, yet it offers a taller load space, making it ideal for urban deliveries. Despite its size, it boasts an impressive 10-meter turning circle – similar to that of a Renault Clio, ensuring manoeuvrability in tight city spaces.
Design That Stands Out
The Renault Estafette concept doesn’t just stop at practicality – it’s designed to turn heads. The body is streamlined with a sleek, modern aesthetic that defies the typical “boxy” van shape. While the primary colour is a muted grey, the lemon-yellow roof adds a playful pop of colour, hinting at the brand’s fun, retro personality.
The rear of the van features a roller shutter door that opens vertically to maximize the loading height. This thoughtful design element makes it easier for delivery drivers to access cargo in cramped urban environments without worrying about swing-out doors.
In short, Renault’s design philosophy of “humanisation,” introduced with their electric Renault 5, is evident in every curve of the van, aiming to make utility vehicles more relatable and friendly.
A Cabin Built For Comfort And Innovation
Step inside the Estafette, and you’re greeted with a zesty yellow cockpit that’s as innovative as it is vibrant. Designed with driver comfort in mind, the cockpit allows for standing room, thanks to its generous roof height. The driver’s seat swivels for flexibility, and a fold-up training seat is included for those learning the ropes of urban delivery.
What sets the Estafette apart, however, is its dashboard – equipped with not one, but four screens. A 7-inch screen displays key driving information, while a 12-inch central screen handles apps tailored for the vehicle’s commercial users. There are also two 10-inch vertical screens providing real-time rearview footage, thanks to the external cameras.
Renault has also gone above and beyond by introducing a 3D feel to the interior, with surfaces patterned in small squares, making the cabin both visually engaging and tactile.
The Future Of Utility Vehicles
While the Estafette is a showpiece of Renault’s creative and design capabilities, it’s more than just eye candy. This van is the first vehicle built on Renault’s FlexEVan platform, representing a groundbreaking shift towards Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). This means the van’s software can receive updates and upgrades throughout its lifecycle, ensuring it stays up-to-date with the latest technological advancements.
The FlexEVan platform is a collaboration between Renault, the Volvo Group, and logistics company CMA CGM, and it’s designed with the future in mind. As cities move towards greener logistics solutions, the Estafette concept embodies the vision of compact, connected, and sustainable delivery vehicles.
Philippe Divry, CEO of Flexis SAS, summed it up perfectly: “The Estafette Concept is the first example of what electric utility vehicles will look like tomorrow: purpose-engineered to drive in cities, compact, connected, and built for fully sustainable delivery services.”
