What on earth is a digital twin and what does it have to do with automotive design? The short answer is a lot of very exciting things! But let’s break it down a little more so you can get a better understanding of how the world of computer tech, digitisation, digital simulation, AI, computer learning, data management, and cloud technology is busy shaping the cars we get to drive into the future.
Why Would a Car Have a Virtual Twin?
The official definition of a ‘digital twin’ is a digitised replica of an object or system. This name was derived from the fact that the digital versions of vehicles such as Renault’s were created after the physical ones had been designed and created. A team of technicians would spend countless hours digitising the real vehicle to copy it to a digital space, right down to the last fitting and bolt. However, these days the name is actually already a little outdated since the virtual version of these cars exist even before the physical one becomes a reality.
Leveraging Technology to Drive the Future
Renault is blazing the trail in this brave new field of automotive design, with the support of an unbeatable team of designers and engineers that use the developing technology to plot, grow and solve the complexity of the vehicles we need to have in our increasingly connected world in which IoT has become commonplace.
The amazing thing about this type of tech is that a lot of problems can be solved virtually even before the car goes onto the manufacturing line. This includes the finetuning of the exterior and interior to create the best possible look and feel. The engineering team can also use digital simulation tools to check ergonomics and the effectiveness of human-machine interfaces. Not to mention tests to ensure that everything is fully compliant and system operations are running faultlessly of course.
How exciting is all of this?
