How Renault Used 3D-Printers To Make Medical Visors

Renault’s 3D-Printed Visors

The coronavirus has wreaked havoc across the world affecting nearly every sector as the lockdown continues with no end in sight. While it’s hard to find good news during these challenging times, the way individuals and companies have responded is uplifting and that includes Renault using 3D printers to make medical supplies.

Renault 3D Printing Medical Equipment

Like all other car manufacturers, Renault had to shut its doors due to the severe spread of coronavirus, particularly in Spain. Their production facilities hit pause citing the outbreak but instead of sitting idly by, Renault staff took it upon themselves and found a way to help.

In March, Renault workers in Spain utilised their free time to join the fight against COVID-19 by 3D printing medical visors for healthcare workers. The Renault employees who were sent home due to factory closures have made around 50 mask supports, which are completed by inserting acetate sheets that shield the face. According to Renault, this scheme could be expanded to make additional medical equipment elsewhere.

3D Printing Ventilator Parts

These actions echo experiments by other carmakers as they try to find ways to boost the production of medical equipment. While the initial focus was on medical visors, companies aimed at helping build ventilators to ease the shortages in Spain and other areas where the situation is dire.

A Renault engineer confirmed that the company might be able to use 3D printers in France to make parts for ventilators. Considering the severity of the coronavirus and how it affects the respiratory system, ventilators are critical in treating coronavirus patients with severe symptoms.

While Renault has done an admirable job, other automakers have followed in their path. Another French car manufacturer, PSA, said it was working with Air Liquide to find ways to increase ventilator production.

At the time of writing this article, global infections have surpassed 4.4 million with over 300,000 fatalities, while in South Africa, there are 12 739 confirmed cases with 238 deaths. The only way to get through these unprecedented times is by working together and staying at home as far as possible.

It’s not only our economy that’s struggling, but every country across the world is also facing its own set of challenges. For some, the situation is more serious than for others but we have to stay positive and do what we can to help one another.
