No matter when you were born, you’re sure to remember the Renault models that were popular during your childhood, teenage years and adulthood. The reason for this is simple: Renault has been making memorable cars for over a century. When Louis Renault manufactured his first vehicle in 1898 – 117 years ago – he may not have predicted that the company which bears his name would be one of the world’s biggest car makers in our time. Here are some of the most famous models that have rolled off its factory floor over the years.
Voiturette (1898)
On Christmas eve, 1898, Renault’s founder spent several exciting hours showing off his first car to the citizens of Paris. The Voiturette (or ‘little car’) soon became a hot seller in France, setting the scene for Renault’s future success. The Voiturette was fitted with Continental tires – the same brand that is still fitted to many Renaults today.
Suprastella (1938)
Forty years after Renault had launched its first vehicle, the company was still going strong. The Suprastella was an 8 cylinder luxury sedan that reached a top speed of 115 km/h – great performance for the time! Built on the eve of World War 2, the Suprastella was the last of Renault’s stately limousines from a bygone era of elegance.
Renault 5 (1972)
More than three decades on, Renault had survived the war and was back on its feet (or wheels) in a reconstructed France. By this time, Renault had become a household name in countries all over the world – including South Africa – and one of its most popular models was the funky and compact Renault 5. Trendy and fuel efficient, the 5 was a taste of things to come.
Clio (1990-present)
When Renault launched the original Clio in 1990, the city car was born. Stylish, compact, easy to park and easy on fuel, the Clio went on to become one of the most successful models in the company’s history and set the trend for small commuter vehicles.
Although these Renault models stand out as iconic vehicles of their time, there are scores of great Renaults that came between and after them. With more than a century of motoring excellence to its name, Renault is an inspiration to car fans across the globe. Find your inspiration today! Browse all available Renault models here.
