The New Renault Clio Is Sleek And More Dynamic Than Ever

New Renault Clio

The New Renault Clio Coming To South Africa

Considering the resounding success of the previous Renault Clio stock, the air is filled with anticipation ahead of the fifth-generation Clio. It will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show starting on March 7th. The latest edition Renault Clio is reportedly a sleeker, more dynamic and connected version than ever before.

While the new Clio gets a complete overhaul changing all the body panels, it still looks much the same. And that is definitely not a bad thing as the outgoing model still looks stylish, modern and sporty. So what can we expect from the fifth generation brand new spec Renault Clio?

What’s Changed On The Renault Clio?

While there are several improvements, the most notable changes are on the inside with a smarter and more modern interior. Starting with the 9.3-inch (23.6cm) multimedia screen, it is fitted vertically and also angled towards the driver for improved visibility and accessibility. The state-of-the-art system provides access to the Renault Easy Link multimedia system which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Adding to that is quick access to the vehicle’s Multi-Sense settings such as the driving mode and interior ambiance among others. For the first time ever, the new Renault Clio will also feature a digital instrument panel replacing the tradition analogue dashboard.

Many Renault fans will be pleased to know that among all the new technology, there are still normal buttons and knobs for air-conditioning and heating. Much to everyone’s delight, there is also more overall space with additional legroom for rear passengers, a bigger glovebox and a bigger boot with a capacity between 330 and 391-litres depending on the model.

Renault Clio Exterior and Specifications

The new Clio has certainly matured and from first glance, it appears to share some elements from the latest Renault Megane. In addition to full LED headlights across, the new Renault Clio is a little shorter and lower than the outgoing version as the French automaker opted for better handling.

Even though they’ve toned down on the plastic cladding, it still has the hidden rear door handles and pointy taillights. Renault also went big on the finishing touches with the new R.S. Line replacing the GT Line trim making way for the new honeycomb grille, an F1 inspired spoiler ‘blade’ and unique 17-inch alloy wheels. They have also included two stunning exterior hues in Valencia Orange and Celadon Blue.

In terms of engine specs, Renault has remained silent about the actual technologies and driver assistance systems. However, the French automaker promised that the new Renault Clio will be a “pioneer in this respect” by making “the driver assistance systems leading to autonomous driving widely available on a city car”.

Even though there is no official release, the best guess would be the new 1-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine that the group has just announced for the Nissan Micra. The entry-level 1.0 engine in the Nissan has conventional fuel injection pushing a respectable 74kW and 160Nm. The more high-tech 1.0 engine with direct injection is set at around 86kW and 180Nm.

It’s still unclear whether the Clio will have the same output levels but either way, it will likely remain close to those specs. That said, Renault also hinted at the possibility that hybrid versions will be on offer. The new sleek Renault Clio is set to launch in South Africa late 2019 or early 2020. This is the first Renault that will be built on the group’s updated CMF-B platform.
