Advanced Driver Training:
What you need to know to be better on the roads

Being able to drive a car is a bit like walking – once you can do it, you can’t imagine a world where you couldn’t. It is almost like second nature. But the reality is that for the most part, when we are taught to drive we are in fact just taught to pass a test. It is possible to pass your driving test and get your license without ever having driven on a highway or in torrential rain. You might never have driven on a dirt road or at night. And as we ALL know, the longer we drive the more bad habits we pick up too. It is quite possible that if faced with the prospect of retaking a driving test ten or 15 years after first taking it many people would fail due to bad habits picked up over the years.

The reality is that cars today are bigger and faster than they’ve ever been, and roads are just the same if not worse. So what to do? Perhaps it is time to consider Advanced Driver Training?

But what is Advanced Driver Training and why should you consider it?

According to the Arrive Alive website Advanced Driver Training is defined as: “The ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to make reasonable progress unobtrusively, with skill and responsibility. The skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all round observation, anticipation and planning. This must be co-ordinated with good handling skills. The vehicle should always be at the right place on the road at the right time, travelling at the right speed with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely in the distance that can be seen to be clear.”

95% of all motor vehicle accidents are the result of human error. Imagine if we could reduce this through improved training and skills behind the wheel. The number of road deaths would be considerably reduced. But there are several other advantages to undergoing Advanced Driver Training besides making better, safer drivers of those who participate.

  • Better driving and a better understanding of how your car works means that the wear and tear is reduced and so are the running costs
  • Lower insurance premiums
  • Reduced stress levels because of higher confidence and ability
  • Better driving means better fuel consumption

At Renault we have implemented racing technology into many of our cars, particularly the sports range. With this improved technology and speed comes the need to be a better driver. As such we offer a Renault SA Advanced Driver Training program to all our customers. As part of our program driver will be taught how to handle defensive driving, advanced driver safety, collision and accident avoidance as well as hijacking prevention.
