Renault opened a Refactory in Spain
Following hot on the heels of the announcement that Renault ElectriCity is officially the largest and most competitive EV production facility throughout Europe, we’re now also proud to announce that the second Renault ‘Refactory’ will be operational in Spain by the end of 2022.
What on Earth is a Refactory?
We are so glad you asked! It’s an amazing new initiative launched by Renault to recycle and renew pre-owned vehicles. So, instead of cars, or parts thereof, ending up in a landfill or dumpsite somewhere, it’s given a new lease on life and becomes a part of the circular economy instead.
The first Refactory was established at the Renault plant in Flins, France. The second one will be located in Seville, Spain. This news was aptly shared with the public on the anniversary of the day the first one opened and underpins Renault’s commitment to making sustainable choices in the face of the climate crisis.
What will happen at the Refactory in Seville?
As soon as everything is up and running at the Seville plant, the team there will commence reconditioning used vehicles, as well as repairing and developing applications for batteries so they can be used for energy storage, etc. They will also take ownership of the recycling, resource management and the manufacture of E-Tech gearboxes, and run a training centre that is dedicated to the circular economy at large.
Not all of these functions will be available immediately, but vehicle conditioning should definitely commence by the end of 2022, which means that Renault will gain the capacity to refurbish 10 000+ vehicles per year, while they will be able to repair up to 1000 battery units per annum by 2025.
