Renault’s Concept EV: Megane eVision
Car manufacturers around the world are working tirelessly to deliver more environmentally friendly vehicles and some of the results have been astounding. However, few are as impressive in stature and technology as the latest rendering of the Renault Megane eVision concept hatchback.
The future of electric vehicles is certainly an exciting prospect and the Renault Megane eVision is a real glimpse of what it could be. This stunning hatchback will be fully electric using an advanced CMF-EV platform with promising range and, not surprisingly, some serious torque and power.
Details On The Renault Megane eVision Future Concept
In terms of looks, you can easily recognise the Renault Megane eVision from a distance from the new lighting signature supported by LIVING TECH technological innovations to added contours. The styling should make any motoring enthusiast smile as it almost brings the car to life, especially up close and personal.
Based on the MORPHOZ Concept car, the Renault Megane eVision has large wheels with very specific design requirements. For greater efficiency, the wheels are closed in as much as possible on the outside while being aligned closer with the body for enhanced aerodynamics.
They further enhanced the eVision by using retractable door handles that sit flush against the door until you need it. The concept is compact at 4.21m long which is a little shorter than the average mid-size hatchback but Renault boss Luca De Meo has confirmed it is more spacious than its rivals. Considering that he recently came from the VW Group, he should know.
What Powers The Renault Megane eVision?
The Renault Megane eVision concept is impressive underneath as it is outside. They’ve equipped the eVision with a battery that gives it the power of a traditional hatchback while keeping its compact dimensions. However, there’s nothing traditional about this concept with the futuristic design and advanced technologies which have allowed it to overcome the barriers that previously prevented a seamless switch to electric.
How did they do that? The secret is within an ultra-thin 60 kWh battery which Renault says is “one of the thinnest batteries on the market”. Because the car sits lower to the ground with better aerodynamics, it greatly reduces electric consumption while significantly improving driving range or 281 miles WLTP (450 km). This signifies exceptional battery efficiency and faster charging as it’s water-cooled, allowing 130kW charging which means 160 miles (257 km) extra range in just half an hour.
It’s this thinner battery that has allowed the automaker to ‘break all the design rules’ as it creates more interior space even though the car is slightly shorter than the average hatchback. Fact is, the new CMF-EV platform allows a more modular and spacious environment without having to add extra height and length.
The cabin capacity can be compared to that of C-segment vehicles which means the Renault Megane eVision is ideal for city driving while still offering plenty of room and comfort for passengers on longer journeys.
The front motor produces 217 bhp which takes it to 62mph (100 km/h) in ‘less than eight seconds’ while the platform also has space for a second motor at the rear. This can only mean one thing and that is the real possibility of the automaker launching a RenaultSport version.
According to De Meo, the looks are ‘95% of the real thing’ so we can expect much of the same once it goes into production late next year. Early estimates suggest they will launch the Renault Megane eVision in the UK early 2022 but there’s no confirmation yet on availability in South Africa.
